Working with an Immigration Attorney

The Center for International Programs will advise you on F-1 and J-1 visa regulations to the best of our ability.  However, there may be times when it is best to consult with an immigration attorney to get the most accurate information regarding your case.  Please note that Saint Mary's College does not recommend or promote any specific immigration attorney.  All students, staff and faculty are free to consult with or hire any immigration attorney that they choose.

Choosing an Attorney

Ask yourself the following questions before hiring an immigration attorney:

  • Do you feel comfortable talking about your case with them?  Do they listen attentively when you talk?
  • Do they respond to emails and return phone calls in a timely manner?  Can you meet with them in person?
  • How much experience do they have?  What type of immigration cases do they normally work with?
  • Are they familiar with student visa regulations and benefits?
  • Do you feel comfortable following the advise that they give?  Do you trust them?
  • What are their fees?

NAFSA: The Association of International Educators, a highly regarded professional network that specializes in international student affairs, has additional resources to identifying an immigration attorney that is best suited for you.

Consultation Fees

Most immigration attorneys charge a consultation fee to have a conversation or ask questions specific to your case.  Be sure to inquire with the attorney about their fees before asking questions or seeking advise related to your case.
