Maintaining F-1 or J-1 Status
All international students in the U.S. must comply with the regulations that govern their visa. The Center for International Programs will guide students in how to maintain their status, but it is the student's responsibility to always comply with the rules and regulations of their visa.
International students have to meet certain requirements and follow specific rules when attending school in the U.S. to not violate their status. Read the information below carefully!
F-1 Students
- Attend the International Student Orientation
- Report your local address and phone number to the Center for International Programs
- Report any changes in your local address to the Center for International Program within 10 days of the change
- Enroll in full-time courses each term, except for your final term
- Keep immigration documents current
- Comply with U.S. employment laws
- Depart the U.S. within 60 days of your Program End Date unless you've applied for OPT, transferred to another U.S. institution, or applied for a change of status to another visa category
- Obey all Federal, State and Local laws
J-1 Students
- Attend the Exchange Student Orientation
- Report your local address and phone number to the Center for International Programs
- Report any changes in your local address to the Center for International Programs within 10 days of the change
- Enroll in full-time courses for each term
- Keep immigration documents current
- Maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay in the U.S.
- Comply with U.S. employment laws
- Depart the U.S. within 30 days of your Program End Date
- Obey all Federal, State, and Local laws
