Below you will find a list of scholarships available to you. 

Saint Mary's Study Abroad Scholarships

SMC Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for students who meet the following criteria: Pell Grant recipient, minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, little to no previous study abroad experience, accepted to study abroad for a semester/year through an SMC, Exchange, or Lasallian Consortium program.  This scholarship is meant to help cover the costs associated with studying abroad such as tuition, housing abroad, airfare, visa application fees, etc. The application can be accessed via the SMC study abroad online application. The application deadline is as follows:

Fall: March 1

Spring: October 1

Diversity Abroad Scholarships/Grants

DiversityAbroad.com has partnered with several organizations to offer study abroad grants and scholarships. Foundation for Global Scholars
The mission of the Foundation for Global Scholars is to “create global citizens and leaders by assisting students in achieving their personal and professional goals of obtaining cultural and academic experiences throughout the world” Since its inception in 2006, the Foundation for Global Scholars has awarded $969,500 in 982 scholarships to students going abroad to 16 different countries. 

Golden Key Scholarships and Awards
Golden Key is an internationally recognized, non-profit organization affiliated with over 400 universities throughout Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, The Bahamas, and the United States. The Society’s mission is to enable members to realize their potential through the advancement of academics, leadership, and service.

General Scholarships

Boren Awards and Scholarships
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. 

The Douglass-O'Connell Global Internship (CIEE)

The Douglass-O'Connell Global Internship program is a fully-funded 8 week summer internship program in Dublin, Ireland, that includes an immersive work placement and an academic course on Irish History and Culture. 

Fund for Education Abroad
FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.  FEA has a funding amount of up to $10,000 and awards up to 10 scholarships per academic year. 

National Security Education Program
Information on NSEP scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study in non-traditional regions, as well as institutional grants. Note that NSEP grants have a service obligation. See also NSEP's Guide to Study Abroad and Global Careers in Non-traditional Destinations at http://www.worldstudy.gov/

Study Abroad Italy Scholarship

SAI is pleased to offer scholarships to deserving students each academic year. These scholarships are open to all SAI participants who meet the eligibility requirements. The deadlines are as follows:

Fall sessions: June 1
Spring sessions: October 15
Summer sessions: March 15

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Award
This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Award recipients receive up to $5,000. Sponsored by: U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Administered by: Institute of International Education (IIE).
Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 "Critical Need Language" Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 

Institutes for Citizens & Scholars Fellowships
The Thomas R. Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship program provides funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial needs are encouraged to apply. The deadline ranges depending on the fellowship.

Hostelling International USA

The HI USA Community Hostelling Fund provides support travel scholarship programs in 13 cities metropolitan areas across the country aimed at helping travelers aged 18 to 30 realize their dreams. 

Scholarships by Continent

Asia

American Assocation of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) Bridging Scholarship

Bridging Scholarship recipients receive stipends of up to $2,500 for a semester’s study program or up to $4,500 for an academic-year program. Awardees join the Bridging Scholar community and gain access to an extensive alumni, donor, and supporter network. Foundation programming includes in-person and virtual mentorship opportunities as well as career and networking events.

Freeman Asia Scholarship

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. 

Tanaka & Green Scholarship

The Tanaka and Green Academic Scholarships support short-term academic study (one semester or one academic year) at colleges and universities in Japan. Recipients can receive up to $5,000 for one academic year and up to $4,000 for one academic semester for the 2024-2025 academic year. The scholarship may be used for any combination of tuition and other academic fees, room and board, travel and transportation (including travel within Japan), and other approved expenses.

Europe
CIEE International Study Programs (CIEE-ISP) Scholarships 
Students who are participating in the Study Abroad program in Sevilla, Spain may qualify for the CIEE Scholarship.  
In an effort to make study abroad opportunities available to the widest possible audience, CIEE offers scholarships each year to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.
Eligibility
Available to CIEE Study Center applicants from CIEE Member or CIEE Academic Consortium member institutions only. CIEE member institutions can be found here and CIEE Academic Consortium member institutions can be found here.

French Embassy Granted Scholarships 
The French Embassy offers programs designed to help students pursue their studies in France at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. 
 

National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)
A $5,000 award for two separate categories: Italian American Students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements-open to any area of study and students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in the Italian language, Italian studies, or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential & high academic achievements. 

Walter Jensen Scholarship-American Association of Teachers of French 
This scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a degree in teaching French.  Mr. Jensen will fund one $1500 scholarship per year to help a student pay for a semester or year’s study abroad.
