Acknowledging the Anniversary of George Floyd’s Murder

May 25, 2021

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

Today, May 25, 2021, marks the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The horror of what has been so common an occurrence – the death of people of color by racist violence, especially Black men and women – was brought to the world’s attention through the vigilance of a brave Black teenager, Darnella Frazier. Although the murderer was brought to trial and convicted, violence by law enforcement officers against people of color continues. Even after a national and worldwide protest for change, surveys indicate that awareness and concern by white people is lower than before the Floyd murder.

We acknowledge the work that must continue towards creating a just society and our part, as an educational institution, in realizing it. Today, we extend our hearts and words of comfort to all members of our community who may be reliving the pain of last year, especially our Black students, faculty, staff, and administrators who carry the burden of racist abuse. We will continue to strive to be effective agents of change as a community.

Sincerely,

Margaret Kasimatis, PhD
