New Undergraduate Single Subject Teaching Credential Pathways
There are now 33 different pathways to earn a credential at Saint Mary’s—including every major in the School of Liberal Arts and four majors in the School of Science.
The Kalmanovitz School of Education and the Teacher Education Department are excited to announce new opportunities for our students to earn their teaching credentials in four years. The Senate just passed the proposal for students to earn their single subject credential along with their BAs for many of the majors at Saint Mary’s.
Students can already earn their multiple subject credential (teaching K–8) and their special education credential in four years through the Justice, Community, and Leadership major.
Majors in the following disciplines now have four-year plans and pathways to teach high school—including every department in the School of Liberal Arts. That’s a total of 33 different pathways!

While students will be able to declare these major concentrations for the 2024–25 academic year, current students are able to transition into these pathways; it will be especially easy for first-year students, and sophomores may be able to make it work.
In order to help faculty and students understand these opportunities and to support current students interested in beginning their credential pathways, we will be holding Zoom office hours before the end of the semester. We are also happy to meet individually with students or faculty to review academic evaluations and create new plans of study.

It is significant that a college guided by the work begun by John Baptist de La Salle—one of the original teacher trainers—is one of the first colleges in the entire state of California to provide so many undergraduate pathways to become an educator. Because of our Lasallian mission and values, and our liberal arts core, Saint Mary’s offers a unique education for teacher candidates that centers justice, dialogue, inquiry, cultural humility, and equity. School districts want to hire our students because now more than ever; in the classroom we need transformative teachers who strive to help every child reach their full potential.
We look forward to working with you to support your students who want to become educators.
