What is River of Words?

Since 1995, the River of Words®  program has encouraged young people to explore and savor the watersheds where they live and trained educators to guide them with inspiration and passion.

What Do We Do?

River of Words hosts an annual contest that invites students from around the world to write poetry and create art inspired by their local rivers and watersheds.

And the Summer Retreat?

A partnership between SMC’s Kalmanovitz School of Education and School of Liberal Arts, River of Words® Week brings this network of artists and educators together for the first time for a summer weekend of writing, reflection, and collaboration that will help expand the program’s Watershed Explorer’s Curriculum into more classrooms.

Our Partnership

Kalmanovitz School of Education

The Kalmanovitz School of Education at Saint Mary’s College of California is a top graduate school in the Bay Area and East Bay to offer credential, master’s, and doctorate degree programs in counseling, leadership, and teacher education. We empower students to lead change according to the principles of social justice and the common good through shared inquiry, collaborative learning, and community engagement. Our graduates become highly effective teachers, administrators, leaders, and counselors.

Creative Writing Program

Our MFA in Creative Writing program is a two-year, full time, residential degree program in creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry. We welcome writers from all walks of life and embrace risk taking on and off the page. Our literary community is made stronger when more voices are heard.
