This year marks the 50th Anniversary of HIP HOP, the voice of the Black Experience! ALL are invited to join this interactive workshop as we explore the relationship between a history of exploitive behaviors at the expense of artists within this acclaimed movement, and a climate of cultural/global appropriation that often disenfranchises and dishonors indigenous and contemporary artisans and performers led by mainstream marauders.
The ironic longevity of the ‘Voice of the Culture’ continues to smash negative perceptions often targeted at marginalized Black folks whose predecessors created this cultural sensation under the belly of oppression and injustice in the Bronx, NY circa 1973.
This workshop will offer a safe space for transparency and authenticity as we discuss the ways in which cultural appropriation is experienced within the context of Black innovators/content creators who utilize frameworks of Hip Hop as a platform to express the joyful noise of the Black Culture, while making room to welcome a more respectful and profitable lens of cultural appreciation from White mainstream systems and creators. Pizza will be provided!
