World Peace Day—Learn, Process & Engage in Community
Words Matter When Talking About War & Ally-ship
Date & Time
Location (On-campus)
About
In anticipation of World Peace Day, as many people in our community and across the world are struggling to make sense of the situation between Palestine and Israel, a number of collaborators on campus are coming together to offer a space for learning, processing and community-building in the Soda Center on Thursday, November 16. We invite you to encourage your students to attend and/or consider bringing classes.
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Words Matter
Gabi Kirk will lead us in an interactive teach-in during which our facilitator will take on and invite folks to consider the weight of the words we choose when describing war, people living in the impacted regions, and how we can simultaneously recognize and challenge both antisemitism and Islamophobia and be allies to one another.
Gabi Kirk is a PhD candidate in geography with a designated emphasis in feminist theory and research at University of California Davis. She is a member of Jewish Voice for Peace and has been teaching about and organizing for justice in Israel-Palestine for over ten years.
12 – 1 p.m. Create in Community—Collaborative art hour
The events of the day have been curated for you by staff in the Center for Women & Gender Equity, the Office of Community Life and the Intercultural Center as well as faculty and is being supported by the office of the Dean of Students.
