Professional Overview

Christopher Cobillas-Ottinger (he/him) is an artist and educator apparently residing in Oakland, CA. He earned his MFA in Studio Art from Washington University in St. Louis and a BA in filmmaking at Columbia College Chicago. Prior to his graduate studies, Cobillas-Ottinger worked in film and audio post-production, lending minor contributions to such films as Stir of Echoes, High Fidelity, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, as well as commercial projects for Walmart, Cartoon Network, the Lifetime Network, and others. As an artist, his practice takes the form of moving image, sound, installation, and interactive media, drawing inspiration from the history of cinema, Media Archaeology, and speculative realist philosophy. His work has been exhibited internationally at galleries and institutions such as the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, the Museum London in Ontario, Laumeier Sculpture Park, EXPO Chicago, ACRE Projects, and the Chicago Artist’s Coalition. He has presented his scholarly research in the areas of moving image and Media Archaeology at conferences and symposia such as the SAIC Media Archaeology Institute Symposium, the Modern Language Association Conference, the Pacific Northwest College of Art Spring Colloquium, and the Southeastern College Art Conference. He has taught moving image, digital media, and sound at institutions such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Kentucky College of Art + Design, and the Institute of Art + Design at New England College. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Digital Media Art in the Department of Art + Art History at St. Mary’s College of California.
