Professional Overview
Chi-An Emhoff is an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and teaches in the exercise science and health promotion tracks. Currently, she serves as the department chair and exercise science coordinator. Her background is multidisciplinary, including a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, a M.S. in Human Physiology from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from U.C. Berkeley. As a scientist, Dr. Emhoff is interested in the role of physical activity in the prevention of chronic diseases from the standpoint of energy metabolism. Her research focuses on whole-body adaptations related to carbohydrate storage and utilization that come with endurance training. Her research work has been published in numerous journals including the Journal of Applied Physiology. As a woman in academia, Dr. Emhoff volunteers as a mentor on Engineer Girl, a nationally prominent website encouraging young women to pursue science and engineering. During her free time, Dr. Emhoff enjoys traveling and taking on epic outdoor adventures with family and friends, involving some combination of running, cycling, mountain biking, swimming, hiking, surfing, paddle boarding, and rock climbing.
