📝Equity in Pedagogy and Grading Workshops

Equitable Grading   |   Tuesday, February 25, 2025   |   2:00pm-3:00pm   |   Location Zoom
Facilitator: Laura White, Anthropology

This workshop will allow Saint Mary’s faculty to explore and develop grading policies and procedures that promote equity for all students. Traditional grading systems can sometimes inadvertently perpetuate bias, disadvantage, or inequity, but this workshop will provide participants with the tools and strategies to make grading a more inclusive and just practice. Even better, we hope to demonstrate ways that equity-focused grading can streamline and simplify grading practices rather than complicate them.

We’ll focus BOTH on ways that you can design your courses with equable evaluations in mind, and also on ways that you can implement equitable grading on individual assignments.

This workshop will include practical skills in the following areas:

1.      Standards-based evaluations

2.      Designing and deploying transparent rubrics and other grading tools

3.      Canvas structures for equitable grading and reducing bias

4.      Addressing bias in grading

Implementing Anti-Racist Teaching Practices: Reflections on Engaging with Our Pedagogy and Ourselves  |   Wednesday, April 9, 2025   |   1:30-2:30pm   |   Location  Zoom
Facilitator: Suzy Thomas, Counseling

Have you embraced anti-racist pedagogy? Are you curious about implementing anti-racist teaching but unsure where to start? Examining and disrupting dynamics of power and privilege is at the heart of anti-racist teaching, which begins with our willingness to explore our own positionality in the classroom. What internal/external resources support you in assuming an anti-racist stance? What internal/external factors undermine you? What comes up, on thinking and feeling levels, as we strive to be anti-racist educators? Join in community: share your experiences, learn more about anti-racist teaching, and reflect together on our individual and collective strengths and barriers in this work.
