Brother Michael F. Meister, FSC, PhD Professor, Department of Theology and Religious Studies Director, Joseph Alemany Community Residence Hall Director
Brother Michael has been at Saint Mary’s since 1981 as a member of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies and he has also served the College in administrative roles. Until his recent retirement, he taught courses in various areas of biblical studies, hagiography (study of the Saints), theology and literature, Jan Term courses in Italy, and, for almost twenty years, his favorite course on Dante’s Divine Comedy. He has recently written a new narrative version of the poem, and is creating a website to digitally publish it along with notes, commentary, and art to give mainly students and general readers a rich experience of the poem. He readily credits his broad liberal arts education at Saint Mary’s in the mid-60s for his love of teaching and learning. As a Brother, he sees living and teaching with other Brothers in a community as a great gift, and he is grateful for numerous opportunities to present to Brothers and lay colleagues around the world the rich body of practical and spiritual writings of St. John Baptist De La Salle in retreats, workshops, and presentations. He enjoys cooking (“Just look at me!” he says), photography, literature, poetry, art, music, computers and technology, travel, and film (particularly sci-fi and murder mysteries).
