Campus Events Support Sexual Assault Awareness Month
This week, the Campus Assault Response and Education (CARE) Center is teaming with a number of on-campus organizations to support Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Several of the events are planned around Denim Day, a movement that grew out of a 1998 Italian Supreme Court decision that blamed a survivor for wearing tight jeans. Women in the Italian Parliament protested wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court, and Denim Day is now held around the world in April to bring awareness to the subject.
On Monday, SMC student-athletes will come together with the CARE Center to run a lap around campus in jeans to honor Denim Day and victims of sexual assault. The group will meet in front of the Chapel Lawn at 3 p.m.
On Wednesday, the CARE Center, Student Coalition Against Abuse and Rape (SCAAR), Sustainability SMC, and Gaels LiGHT will partner to host Donuts For Denim Day and the Free Store Denim Table during Community Time. All interested in stopping by can come to Dante Quad for donuts and a look at the denim offerings from the Free Store. Wear your denim in support of survivors, post a photo with the hashtag #denimdaysmc, and you will be entered in a raffle for a $75 credit for a denim purchase of your choice.
Finally on Thursday, SCAAR, CARE, the Center for Women & Gender Equity (CWGE), and sponsors will host a Take Back the Night event at 6:30 p.m. on the Chapel Lawn. The event will feature presenters, spoken word, open mic opportunities, and a candlelit walk in support of survivors.
