Community Reflections on Juneteenth

by Saint Mary's Office of Marketing and Communications | June 20, 2022

Saint Mary's staff members Skye Ward, Sherie Gilmore, Marshall Perry, and James Johnson sat down to share personal reflections, memories, and experiences around Juneteenth. Thank you for sharing with the SMC community.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were free. A century and a half later, people across the U.S. continue to celebrate the day, which is now a federal holiday. An annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War, the day has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s.
