by Frances M. Sweeney, PhD, Professor of Spanish and Vice President for Mission | June 7, 2023

Please join us in congratulating Jim Sciuto, EdD, who has agreed to serve Saint Mary’s College as Vice President for Student Life! After a comprehensive national search, Jim emerged as the clearly best candidate to lead the division. He is highly supported within the community and the right choice to continue the great initiatives underway in Student Life.

Prior to this appointment, Jim has been serving in an Interim role and we are delighted to announce that he will be doing so on a permanent basis.

Jim has been a stable, effective, and mission-driven leader at Saint Mary’s for more than 20 years, having served in roles of increasing responsibility, always with a true student-centered approach and known as an empathic listener and supporter of staff.   His dedication to students from all backgrounds, both undergraduate and graduate, and his commitment to their personal and academic well-being is readily apparent. Jim is the right leader to shepherd Student Life well into the future.

As Vice President for Student Life, Jim will continue to collaborate with many  campus partners to enrich the student experience at Saint Mary’s. In doing so, he provides leadership, vision, and strategic management for many critical offices and programs,  including the Intercultural Center, Center for Women and Gender Equity, Student Involvement and Leadership, New Students programming, Campus Housing, Campus Recreation and Club Athletics, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Conduct, Campus Safety, and Student Health Center. Jim works closely with colleagues on the President’s Senior Staff and oversees more than 40 full- and part-time professionals. He will report to the President of the College.

Jim has been a stable, effective, and mission-driven leader at Saint Mary’s for more than 20 years, having served in roles of increasing responsibility, always with a true student-centered approach and known as an empathic listener and supporter of staff.

In addition to his many roles, since 2000 Jim has served as a Resident  Director, an important position that helps establish an educational living environment for Gael students and one designed to meet their academic, spiritual, personal, and interpersonal needs.

Jim said he is very honored to continue contributing to the mission of Saint Mary’s and humbled to work with such a passionate team to advocate for and enrich the student journey.

“As an alum of Saint Mary's, I look forward to our team’s continued partnership with the campus community—students, faculty, staff, and Christian Brothers—as we strive to enhance student engagement, the living experience, and wellness of all students,” he said.

Having chaired the search committee, I would like to thank the many in our community who took the time to meet the candidates and share their input with the search committee. I especially wish to acknowledge the exceptional work of the search committee members:
