Episode #1: Chained Woman

Music: Joji Hirota Taiko Drummers

Dancer: Samantha Matsumoto

“Chained Woman” was directly inspired by a horrifying news report about a chained woman who was the victim of human trafficking and sexual assualt. She was forced to give birth to eight children. This news was discovered in 2022 at the same time that China was hosting the Winter Olympics. Now “Chained  Woman” in Mandarin has become censored throughout the entire Chinese internet search. This means any further spreading and discussion about this news will be banned on the Chinese internet. You can see the original news report here: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/ 2022/02/17/1080115082/the-mystery-of-the-chained-woman-in-china

This solo is my sentimental offering for remembering the “Chained Woman.” Thanks to my amazing  dancer Sam and my incredible designers Keiko and Matthew.

Episode #2: Velvet

Dancers: Anna Burke, Rochelle Demelo, Olivia Rose Grimes, Kiana Kwong, Katherine Mertel, Elena Prisco, Maggie Sepsey, Macy Yu

The title “Velvet” was borrowed from “Velvet Revolution” in 1989, a national peaceful protest movement to end more than 40 years of communist rule in Czechoslovakia. The piece is to explore and demonstrate the muti-layers of female identity, strength, sass, resistance, hesitation, sensitivity, aggression, compassion, etc. At the end, the dance becomes a collective feminist statement. Thanks  to all the devoted dancers.
