‘Freedom Is Not Free’ — Today’s Celebration of Our Veterans

A message to the Saint Mary's Community

Today, on Veterans Day, I am reminded of a visit I made years ago to Washington, DC, as part of a business trip. The Department of Defense served as our host, and much of our free time was spent touring the Washington Mall and its various memorials. It was one of many occasions when I was able to spend time at the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

This memorial site is one of my favorites. Not only is it a beautiful and poignant reminder of those who fought and perished in that particular conflict, but the engraving, “FREEDOM IS NOT FREE”—next to the Wall and Pool of Remembrance—is a moving tribute to those we honor today.

To me, those four simple words mean a great deal. They speak to the sacrifices our veterans, their families, and loved ones make every day. They remind us of the high cost associated with war, sometimes including human life. But they also remind us of the safety and security that members of the military provide to us every day, often without recognition of what they’ve given up and endured on our behalf.

Beginning with the flag-raising ceremony later this morning, the all-campus BBQ afterward, and continuing throughout the week, I encourage everyone on campus to participate in the various events and activities we have scheduled to commemorate Veterans Appreciation Week.

Together, as one Saint Mary’s community, I hope you will join me in showing our gratitude and support for those who have worn the uniform. Their contributions have shaped our nation and our local communities, and they deserve our respect and recognition.

Sincerely,

Roger J. Thompson, EdD
