Gregory Hayes ‘25, a high school graduate of 2019, initially opted to forgo college in favor of entering the workforce. However, as time passed, it became evident that his job lacked the potential for substantial growth. With aspirations for personal and professional development, Gregory decided to embark on a college journey. His educational pursuit led him to San Joaquin Delta Junior College in Stockton, California, merely a year after graduating from high school. While attending junior college, he balanced part-time employment with his coursework, a testament to his unwavering commitment.

Understanding the importance of furthering his education, Gregory yearned to enhance his prospects in life. This determination prompted him to reduce his work hours, even taking up graveyard shifts to accommodate a full-time schedule at the community college. He was steadfast in his quest to broaden his horizons through higher education.

In 2019, an opportunity to attend Saint Mary's College of California beckoned, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary pause on his academic aspirations. Yet, when the pandemic's grip eventually loosened, Gregory demonstrated his resilience and reapplied for admission. His efforts were rewarded with acceptance once again, this time as a History Major with junior standing.

It was during his journey at SMC that Gregory discovered the Liberal Arts Bridge (LAB) Program where he soon crossed paths with Maria Grazia de Angelis, the LAB Internship Coordinator, during a language course requirement.

Maria Grazia graciously enlightened Gregory about the Liberal Arts Bridge Program's advantages for Liberal Arts Majors. He learned that he could be eligible for a scholarship while pursuing an unpaid internship, setting him on a path toward personal and professional growth. In Maria Grazia, Gregory found a dedicated mentor who guided him through the program, fostering a sense of belonging on campus and a deep understanding of the workshops and events available to him.

Last year, Gregory took part in the Liberal Arts Bridge Program internship information session, gaining insights into various internship opportunities. Reflecting on his experience, he shared, "As an older college student, having a mentor and other student ambassadors there to guide me through the process was a blessing. I am so fortunate as an older college student to have found this program and be able to make professional connections." Soon after, Gregory received the LAB Internship Scholarship to fund his unpaid internship.

Gregory's journey continued as he embraced his internship at an elementary school in San Ramon. Subsequently, he secured another internship, this time closer to his hometown in San Joaquin County at Delta Charter Elementary School, where he served as an after-school program instructional aide.

With a sense of accomplishment and anticipation, Gregory now looks forward to the culmination of his academic endeavors. He is poised to graduate in the spring of 2025, having navigated the challenges and opportunities of his college journey, all thanks to his commitment to personal and professional growth, as well as the invaluable support of the Liberal Arts Bridge Program at Saint Mary's College of California.
