The Machine Awakes: Instrumental Ensemble Virtual Concert

by Dr. Sixto F. Montesinos Jr. | August 29, 2021

The newly-formed Instrumental Ensemble (created and directed by Assistant Professor of Music and Head of Instrumental Studies, Dr. Sixto F. Montesinos Jr.) performed its first concert of instrumental music and electroacoustic accompaniment. This inaugural virtual performance, filmed in the outdoor pavilions, features a work entitled The Machine Awakes by American composer Steve Bryant. This outdoor concert also features music by Giovanni Santos and Jeff Herwig. We recommend using headphones to watch this concert for an optimal listening experience.

The Machine Awakes is the sound of something not human (but of human hands) – something not entirely organic, but most definitely alive – waking up for the first time. From the opening swirling textures, we sense the first hesitant sparks of thought, attempting to find form and coherence. This new machine – sentient, aware – comes fully awake, possessed of emphatic self-determination and unfathomable purpose. - Steve Bryant, composer

The link for the concert will be posted on stmarys-ca.edu/machineawakes on Sept. 1, 2021.
