Makena Carr Drafted by the Seattle Reign in 2024 National Women’s Soccer League Draft
The Saint Mary’s defender is the highest-selected player from the West Coast Conference. And she’s the second SMC Women’s Soccer player to be drafted to a pro league.
Saint Mary's' Makena Carr was selected 43rd overall pick of the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League Draft to Seattle Reign FC.
Carr was the first pick of the fourth round, making her the highest-selected player from the West Coast Conference. She joined SMC this past season, helping the Gaels to a 10–5–3 season. She appeared and started in 18 games, where she was a huge contributor to the Gaels back line. The senior picked up her first point, an assist, in Saint Mary's 1–0 win over nation's top-ranked offense in Gonzaga.
In her last game as a Gael, she put up the game winning goal against LMU and an assist, giving her four points to finish the season. Carr ended her lone season as a Gael with a total of 1,543 minutes played. But the Newcastle, Washington, native was able to be more than just a solid defender, as she showed her versatility and ability to push forward and start the team's runs up field as well.
She is just the second Saint Mary's Women's Soccer player to be drafted to a professional league, joining former goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery who was selected in the third round of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) third annual draft by the Washington Freedom in 2003.
Prior to Saint Mary's, Carr played with the University of Washington. Over the three years as a Huskie, she played a total of 39 games, scoring two goals and two assists. She finished her career as a Huskie with six points and 1,416 minutes played.
