Men's Basketball Freshman Marciulionis Heads to Lithuania for FIBA U19 World Cup
Incoming freshman and highly touted international recruit Augustas Marciulionis appeared in the FIBA U19 World Cup last weekend in Latvia and represented his home country of Lithuania. The tournament featured top young talent from all around the globe and a total of 16 teams participated in the event. Marciulionis leads the U19 World Cup in assists with 15 through two games.
Marciulionis and Lithuania are in Group A of the World Cup, which also includes Senegal, Canada, and Japan. The four teams played a round robin format to determine seeding for the 16-team bracket. Once bracket play began, the tournament became win-or-go-home and concludes on July 11 with the third-place and championship games.
Lithuania lost their game last Saturday against Canada, the No. 2 ranked team according to FIBA. On Sunday, the team faced Senegal and won. The team wrapped up group play against Japan on Monday. Lithuania was ranked No. 5 overall heading into the event.
Marciulionis becomes yet another Gael to compete in the prestigious tournament in recent years. Two summers ago, Alex Ducas and Kyle Bowen represented Australia at the event prior to their freshmen campaigns. Former Gaels Tanner Krebs, Kyle Clark, and Jordan Hunter also played for Australia in the 2015 World Cup.
