Saint Mary’s Alumna, Melanie Stansbury, Wins Historic Seat in Congress in a Landslide Victory!
Saint Mary’s College is immensely proud of our Alumna, Melanie Stansbury ’02, who won New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District yesterday, catapulting her into the United States House of Representatives. She was elected to serve in the seat vacated by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
While at Saint Mary’s, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Ecology and Natural Science. Her background in science and passion for working on community issues provided a solid framework for springboarding her career into significant leadership positions.
Before being elected to Congress, Stansbury served in the New Mexico State House of Representatives (2019). In this role, she worked tirelessly to pass “14 pieces of legislation— focused on addressing childhood hunger, modernizing their electric grid, fostering resilience in the water and food systems, improving education, expanding economic opportunity and Campus Safety, improving access to healthcare, and using sound science in decision-making.” Read full bio here.
Previously, Stansbury served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources after spending three years in the White House Office of Management and Budget.
Saint Mary’s is proud to celebrate her accomplishments, and wishes her Godspeed in her new role as Congresswoman.
