SMC Earns Record Number of Student-Athletes on WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll
Players from every Gaels team achieved academic gold, silver, or bronze honors.
Every single athletic team recorded at least a 3.0 grade point average at Saint Mary's in the 2022–23 academic year. This is the first time in school history the Gaels have been able to make that claim.
With this new record in academic achievement for Gaels student-athletes, SMC was once again named to the prestigious West Coast Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, announced by the West Coast Conference in July. Saint Mary's has 229 student-athletes who qualified, the most in school history for the second year in a row.
This is also the eleventh consecutive Honor Roll featuring more than 1,000 WCC student-athletes. Students must earn at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. A total of 1,805 student-athletes qualified for recognition, establishing a new conference record for academic success, surpassing the mark of 1,795 from 2020–21.
Eighty-five Gaels earned bronze honors (3.00–3.49 GPA), 75 student-athletes earned silver (3.50–3.74 GPA), and 69 Saint Mary's team members earned gold (3.75–4.00).
Making the Grade
Only grades earned at WCC institutions may be used in calculating the grade point average for this award. To be considered for this honor, student-athletes must meet the following requirements:
- Individuals must have earned a varsity letter in a sport which the conference determined a champion in the recently completed academic year.
- The cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 must be based on a 4.0 scale.
- The individuals must have successfully completed an average of at least 12 graded credit hours (non pass-fail hours) per term.
The 229 Gaels are the second-most in the entire WCC, trailing only Gonzaga (285), a considerably larger institution. Last year, Saint Mary's was tied for third with Santa Clara and trailed LMU.
