Welcome Manjit Sappal, Our New Executive Director for Campus Safety & Transportation

by Richard Plumb, PhD, President | December 7, 2022

As finals week continues and as our campus begins to wind down in anticipation of the Christmas break, please join me in welcoming Manjit Sappal to Saint Mary’s College as our new Executive Director for Campus Safety & Transportation. Manjit’s appointment will take effect on January 17.

Manjit is a well-regarded, highly-respected Campus Safety professional with an impressive record of law enforcement and community service. In March, he retired as chief of the Martinez Police Department, where he served for more than six years and successfully addressed a variety of Campus Safety matters.

Manjit knows the Bay Area well, as he also served in both the Pittsburg and Richmond police departments while fine-tuning his law enforcement skills and expanding the scope and breadth of his knowledge base over his 26-year career. He has deep experience in a wide variety of assignments, including patrol, SWAT, high-risk entry teams, crime analysis, and internal affairs, to name a few.

“Saint Mary's College has a well-deserved reputation for enhancing lives by providing an outstanding education and fostering an environment committed to respect, community, and inclusion,” Manjit said in accepting the position. “It was these values that drew me to the campus, and in all of my interactions, these values were reinforced by students, faculty, staff, and administrators. I am excited about being part of an amazing community, building relationships, being a resource, and keeping our community safe. This is a wonderful opportunity and I am humbled to join such a prestigious organization.”

I very much appreciate the work of Aaron Gibson, Associate Director of Campus Safety, who served as Interim Executive Director of Campus Safety and Transportation since July. Thank you, Aaron, for stepping in and serving so capably.

I’m also grateful to Patrick Carew, chair of the search committee, as well as our committee members for their work:

  • Patrick Carew, VP for Strategic Partnerships and Advancement (Committee Chair)
  • Erika Roesch, Senior Manager, Human Resources
  • Anastasia Chavez, Faculty, School of Science
  • Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht, VP for Student Life
  • Ryan Reggiani, Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs
  • Ben Enos, Media Relations Director, Office of Marketing and Communications
  • Cynthia Cooke St. Ange, Title IX Investigator, Human Resources
  • Scott Logan, Project Manager, Facilities Services

I hope all of you share my excitement at having Manjit join our community. I have no doubt he’ll have a positive impact on our campus, and that our Campus Safety & Transportation group will be in excellent hands under his care and leadership.

“I am ready to roll up my sleeves, get to work, and make forward progress at Saint Mary’s College,” Manjit told me. “I look forward to serving our campus and doing my part to be a valuable team member as well as a resource for students, faculty, administrators, and visitors.”

Sincerely,

Richard Plumb, PhD
