Black Lives Matter Subcomittee

The Black Lives Matter subcommittee (BLM) demands accountability of Saint Mary’s College of California, as a community and institution, to recognize and address, rather than react to circumstances of inequitable treatment of Black students, staff or faculty particularly systemic racism at the institution.  As such, the BLM subcommittee exists to improve the quality of Black students, faculty, and staff experiences on campus through actions and methods dedicated to celebrating Blackness in programs like 44 Days Honoring Black History and through the provision of consultative support to the CCIE and to all College departments in service to the needs of Black students, faculty, and staff of Saint Mary’s College.

Membership of Black Lives Matter Subcommittee:

The Black Lives Matter subcommittee (BLM) shall be Co-Chaired by one faculty member, one staff member, and one student representative of the  Black Student Union.  One of the chairs of the BLM will serve on the CCIE full committee.  The core subcommittee shall consist of representatives of Black faculty, staff, and students, as well as a representative of the Christian Brothers, and department representatives from the Intercultural Center, Student Life (VP Student Life and/or Dean of Students), Campus Safety, Ethnic Studies, the High Potential Program, the Student Success Office, Office of Mission, and Campus Communications (totaling at least 15 members). The College Provost and the Associate Provost & Senior Diversity Officer shall be considered ex-officio members of the subcommittee.  The BLM Subcommittee will also remain an open space available to members of the SMC Black community who seek ways to contribute to the BLM charge.

As a subcommittee, the BLM subcommittee will develop and make recommendations to the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence (CCIE) as well as provide direct support and advocacy on the following:

1. Identify the opportunity gaps and call for changes in support of Black graduate and undergraduate students’ academic and personal success, as well as promote and ensure a safe and welcoming College experience; 

2. Promote and ensure that Black faculty and staff who work at Saint Mary's College have an equitable and safe environment to thrive and excel as well as identify the opportunity gaps and call for changes in support as needed;

3. Serve as a campus and community resource for events, curricular and co-curricular opportunities, and organizational information that is of interest or benefit to Black students, faculty and staff.
