Gaslighting can be done by an intimate partner, a boss, a friend, a room mate, or anyone else. It is a technique used by a person(s) to gain power or control over someone else. It makes you doubt yourself and question your own sanity. It is harmful. It can happen to anyone. It is often done over time before the person it is happening to even realizes it. Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse. Learn more about it here.

TECHNIQUES USED BY PEOPLE WHO GASLIGHT:

  • They tell blatant lies 
  • They deny something, even if you have proof
  • They use what is most important to you as ammunition
  • They wear you down over time
  • Their actions do not match their words
  • They provide positive reinforcement as well, which confuses you
  • They are aware that confusion weakens people
  • They project their behaviors and/or opinons onto you so that you spend time defending yourself, rather than paying attention to their behavior
  • They try to align people against you
  • They tell you or others that you are crazy
  • They tell you everyone else is a liar, which gives them more credibility

HOW YOU ARE FEELING MAY BE WARNING SIGNS OF GASLIGHTING:

  • You question if your feelings are justified
  • You second-guess your recollection of past events
  • You find yourself apologizing
  • You make excuses for your partner
  • You think there's something wrong with you
  • You trust the judgement of others over your own
  • You think something might be off
