Independent Study Petition (Undergraduate)
Undergraduate students may arrange with individual instructors to undertake independent study courses. This petition must be completed and approved by the instructor, Department chair and Registrar, and filed no later than the end of the add/drop period. First-years are precluded from taking an independent study during their first term at SMC, unless they have previously completed college coursework elsewhere for a letter grade (i.e., not including AP or IB courses).
The College offers the following kinds of independent studies:
Independent Study - 297 A lower division course taken by a student in good standing (2.00 cumulative G.P.A.) whose educational needs cannot be met by courses available in the regular curriculum.
Independent Study - 498 An upper division course (Field or Lab) taken by a student in good standing (2.00 cumulative G.P.A.) whose educational needs cannot be met by courses available in the regular curriculum.
Independent Study - 497 An upper division course taken by a student in good standing (2.00 cumulative G.P.A.) whose educational needs cannot be met by courses available in the regular curriculum.
You will receive academic credit for all courses. The business office will charge accordingly.
No student may apply more than 12 units of independent studies toward graduation requirements without the permission of the Registrar.
