NEW Leadership® (NEWL) is a statewide college women's public leadership training program at the Saint Mary's College of California. This nine-day residential summer institute educates college students about the important role that politics plays in the lives of women, introduces them to successful women leaders, and provides them with the tools to become more involved in the political process.

NEW Leadership®, a non-partisan nine-day residential program, gives undergraduate students the tools to become effective leaders in the political arena regardless of their academic interests or career path. The NEW Leadership® summer institute is a non-partisan, nine-day residential program that will take place June 21-28, 2024 at the Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga, CA. During the summer institute, students will meet women leaders, learn about women's participation in American politics, and develop and practice leadership skills through panel discussions, workshops, and projects. After the summer institute, participants become part of NEWL's national network of distinguished alumnae.

Cost

There is no direct cost to the students to participate in NEW Leadership®. The NEW Leadership® program is supported by the generous donations of corporate sponsors and individuals that cover some of the program costs. Each participating college and university is asked to pay a $500 program fee per student in order to defray expenses.

Applicants are required to provide contact information for a faculty or staff member at their school who will agree to assist them in obtaining funding for the $500 NEW Leadership® program fee.

NEW Leadership® Saint Mary's is open to undergraduate students enrolled in any California college or university and California residents enrolled in out-of-state schools. Rising juniors, seniors, and spring semester graduates at 4-year institutions and students at 2-year institutions in sophomore year are eligible to apply. Women of color, LGBTQ women and nonbinary students, and nontraditional college students are especially encouraged to apply. Each NEW Leadership® cohort includes students from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, and educational backgrounds.. We are committed to including students from diverse socioeconomic, sexual orientations, gender identities, and ethnic and racial backgrounds in each NEW Leadership® program. We strongly encourage women of color, non-traditional college women, students who may be gender non-conforming, nonbinary, or transgender, and students majoring in fields outside political science to apply.

Commitment

NEW Leadership® participants are expected to attend all summer institute sessions and live in residence at Saint Mary's College during the entire program from June 21-28, 2024. If you are accepted, you will be required to acknowledge and agree to meet these requirements.

Accepted students are required to confirm their intention to attend, at which point the school will be billed for the $500 program fee. Saint Mary's College cannot offer a refund if a student does not attend the program. There is no direct cost to the students to attend.

COVID Safety Protocols
