This member of the SMC Board of Trustees is a highly sought-after national and international Lasallian leader for equity and presenter at conferences, workshops, and retreats. Now, he's set to speak to more than 300 grad students.
Brother Ernest Miller, FSC, DMin, Hon. EdLD ’22, will deliver the address at the 2024 Graduate and Professional Studies Commencement ceremony at Saint Mary’s College on May 26.
Brother Ernest serves as the founding Director of the Adrien Nyel Project in the Lasallian District of Eastern North America, a ministry designed to encourage the vocation for teaching within the Lasallian charism. Formerly, he was Vice President of Mission, Diversity, and Inclusion at La Salle University. In this video, Brother Ernest describes the genesis and purpose of the Adrien Nyel Project:
Brother Ernest completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in May 2015. His doctoral thesis focuses on the intersection of Lasallian education and evangelization and the promotion of justice.
His academic credentials also include a BA in Political Science from Loyola University New Orleans; an MA in International Affairs from The Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University; an MA in Education from La Salle University; and a Master’s in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University. In 2022, he was presented with an honorary Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership from Saint Mary's.
“The Catholic social tradition affirms not only the inviolable dignity of all people, but also emphasizes the responsibility to protect the human dignity of each person, especially those who society marginalizes, minoritizes, and disinherits,” Brother Ernest said in his 2022 Academic Convocation at Saint Mary’s. “Likewise, the Catholic intellectual tradition promotes the development of an authentic community—a community comfortable with and capable of investigating, questioning, and celebrating differences.”
A native of New Orleans, Brother Ernest is a member of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (FSC). He joined the De La Salle Brothers in 1993, in Philadelphia, to begin initial formation. In 1998, he made his first profession of vows after his novitiate year in Skaneateles, New York, and in 2003, he made his final profession of vows in Washington, DC.
“The Catholic social tradition affirms not only the inviolable dignity of all people, but also emphasizes the responsibility to protect the human dignity of each person, especially those who society marginalizes, minoritizes, and disinherits.”
He served three years (2009–12) as the Associate Executive Director for Mission and Ministry in the District of Eastern North America (DENA). Before the creation of DENA in 2009, he served two years (2007–09) as Director of Education and Lasallian Mission Formation in the former District of Baltimore.
Prior to his five years in District service, Brother Ernest served as a teacher at three Lasallian secondary schools in Pennsylvania: Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh; La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor; and West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia.
Brother Ernest has presented at numerous conferences, workshops and retreats on Lasallian historical and educational themes, the Catholic social tradition, human rights, and religious brotherhood, among others. In 2010, he was the Convener of the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations in New York. He is a Convenor of the Lasallian Higher Education Colloquy and serves on the Board of Trustees of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, and Manhattan College in Bronx, New York. Brother Ernest was elected to the SMC Board of Trustees in 2022.
